Two Landsat images of the Fan-Bighorn Creek area in northwestern Yellowstone.  The left image is from July, 1988, and a forest fire can be seen burning in the center of the image.  Smaoke plumes are visible.  The right image is from July 1999, eleven years later.  Regenerating forest appears as a medium green color in area burned by the 1988 fires.

Remote sensing of 1988 Yellowstone fires.  The left image, using visible light, is what you'd see flying over a forest fire - smoke!  The right image combines several infrared bands (reflective and thermal infrared) to cut through the smoke.  Bright yellow areas are actively burning fire lines.
