Acre-foot
The amount of water it would take to cover one acre of land with one
foot of water, which equals 325,581 gallons.
Actual Sedimentation Rate
The calculated sediment accumulation in a reservoir that is the volume difference between the most recent and original bathymetric surveys divided by the period of time since the stream was diverted through the dam.
Bathymetric Survey
The measurement of the bottom contours of a reservoir.
Capacity at Most Recent Survey
The volume of water in the identified pool when the most recent survey was completed.
Design Life
The number of years the sediment reserve volume is designed to accumulate sediment before being filled with sediment. The period of time during which a reservoir can provide 100% of all authorized purposes.
Design Life Storage
The amount of storage anticipated to be available at the design life of the reservoir.
Design Sedimentation Rate
Expected sedimentation rate at time of construction.
Downstream Senior Water Rights Holders
Entities that withdraw raw water
directly from rivers downstream of federal reservoirs that held water rights prior to
the lake being constructed.
Estimated Current Capacity
The volume of water in the identified pool projected to the present (see date at bottom of fact sheet) calculated as the original volume minus the actual sedimentation rate times the amount of time since the stream was first diverted through the dam.
Estimated Water Supply Yield
The amount of water, usually in mgd, the water supply pool can continuously provide during a 2% drought. Due to sedimentation, the yield will decline over time. When computed, yields are estimated forty years into the future from the date of the yield analysis.
Eutrophication
An excess of mineral and organic nutrients that promote the prolific growth of plant life, especially algae, in reservoirs and ponds.
Gates Closed
Date gates were closed and storage began.
Hydraulic Residence Time
A calculated time value (usually shown in years) that relates the volume of a reservoir to the average net rate of inflow. Smaller values indicate relatively large inflows compared to the reservoir volume. Larger values indicate relatively small inflows compared to the reservoir volume. The hydraulic residence time does not indicate that all of the reservoir water is “replaced” at this average interval. The flow of water through a reservoir is often a complex system that ranges from in-lake currents to still waters, and these flow conditions are affected by inflow, rainfall, evaporation, wind, air and water temperatures, and other factors.
Hydrologic Unit Code
A way of numerically identifying all drainage basins in a nested arrangement from largest to smallest. The more numbers in a HUC, the smaller is the drainage basin.
Loss of Capacity to Date
The amount of storage lost to sediment since the stream was first diverted through the dam.
Most Recent Survey Year
The year the most recent reservoir survey was completed.
Multipurpose Pool
Also called the Conservation Pool, this is the normal operating pool level of the reservoir that is used for recreation, water supply, low flow augmentation, and other beneficial uses, excluding flood control.
Original Reservoir Storage Capacity
The as-built multipurpose and flood control capacity of the reservoir before any sediment accumulation, including the reserved sediment pool.
Original Sediment Survey Year
The original survey at construction completion before the reservoir was filled with water. The original bottom contours at time of construction. The original survey represents the capacity prior to any accumulation of sediment or water. That year is the year the stream was first diverted through the dam.
Sediment Pool
The volume of storage anticipated to accumulate sediment during the design life of the reservoir.
State Designated Uses
The uses for which the Kansas Department of Health and Environment establishes water quality standards.
Total Maximum Daily Loads
The maximum amount of a pollutant from both point and non-point sources that cannot be exceeded within a given body of water without exceeding water quality standards.
Two Percent Drought
A drought having a statistical chance of occurring once every 50 years, on the average. The drought which has a two percent chance of occurrence in any one year is assumed to lie within the continuous drought of record during the years 1952 through 1957.
Water Appropriation Right
A legal right to withdraw a specific amount of water during a year.
Water Assurance Storage
The amount of storage in the reservoir that has been purchased by a Water Assurance District. Releases from this storage are made to meet the District’s members’ downstream needs.
Water Marketing Storage
The amount of storage in the reservoir that is contracted for from the Corps of Engineers and paid for by water marketing customers.
Water Supply Storage
The amount of water (acre-feet) the state has contracted for with the Corps of Engineers.
Watershed District
A legal entity formed to construct and operate flood control structures.
Watershed Drainage Area
The land area within a watershed that directly contributes runoff to the reservoir. This area only includes the land between two federal reservoirs.
Watershed Sediment Yield
The average annual volume of sediment load transported by the river into the reservoir.
Years to Fill Sediment Storage of Multipurpose Pool from Time of Gate Closure
At actual sedimentation rate the year the volume of storage will equal the design life storage.
