RJ is a Ph.D. student in the Geography Department at the University of Kansas. He received a B.S. in geography at Brigham Young University in 2002 and an M.A. in geography at the University of Kansas in May of 2005. His master’s thesis research focused on the potentials for using remote sensing and GIS for calculation of a proxy yield for a crop insurance for rangeland and pasture, a program the USDA hopes to implement nationwide in the near future. In this work he evaluated how well the proxy measurements from the satellite imager correlated with rancher perception of drought (see link to thesis, and study summary, text below). RJ has worked as a Graduate Research Assistant at the Kansas Applied Remote Sensing (KARS) Program since 2002. His work here includes the construction of a time-series AHVRR NDVI dataset over eastern Africa, GIS support and analysis for rangeland and pasture insurance program research and development, and most recently the construction of a time-series MODIS NDVI dataset over North America.
